ARP 101 LIVE @ NOTTING HILL ARTS CLUB - FRIDAY 15TH FEBRUARY

This month we’re excited to announce someone we’ve been looking to book since we kicked off back in August 2012 & thanks to DC we're ON!… ARP 101 (Eglo Records)

ARP 101 is the astro-funk alias of Alix Depauw, otherwise known as London-based D&B producer Alix Perez. As with many producers, Alix splits different sides of his sound over two monikers, with ARP 101 being ‘an alias for freedom’ for the innovative beat maker – ‘it’s where I can experiment and produce anything I feel, and it’s the same with the performance side of things when I’m DJing and playing live.’

Since releasing his critically-acclaimed debut on Alex Nut and Floating Point’s Eglo imprint, ARP 101 has had a string of releases and remixes which have come out on Bonobo, Ninja Tune, Starkey, Civil Music, Slugabed and others. Forthcoming EPs will be released on Eglo Records, Om Unit’s Cosmic Bridge Records and Donky Pitch. Props have come across the board from Dam Funk, Benji B, Mary Anne Hobbs, One Man and many more.

We continue with our exclusive B-Side flexi disk is in the form of Arp 101's, quite frankly huge, Mystery Man. Only available at B-Side

B-SIDE : KIDKANEVIL LIVE @ NOTTING HILL ARTS CLUB FRI 18TH JANUARY

We're excited about our first session of 2013 back in West London's loudest basement, with KidKanevil playing one of his genre defying live sets.

DJ/Producer Kidkanevil first came to prominence with the release of his critically acclaimed debut album ‘Problems & Solutions’ back in 2007, and has since gone from strength to strength.

Described by Bonobo as “like the best moments of RJD2 and Timbaland combined…incredible!” and “a sonic visionary” by iDJ, the kid has earnt the praise and respect of numerous peers and journalists, counting the likes of DJ Shadow and Wire Magazine amongst his fans, and progressives Tokimonsta, Blue Daisy and Illum Sphere amongst his contemporaries.

Having 3 solo albums under his belt the Kid's latest offering see's him team up with Japan's Daisuke Tanabe to release 'Kidsuke'. Both a headphone experience and dance floor dynamite, it’s an intelligent journey into the creative mind of a truly innovative and experimental producer.

Fresh off 2012's Red Bull Music Academy and ready to unleash a barrage of new music and collaborations on the world, this is just the beginning.

Blurring the lines between hip-hop, future beats, jazz, jungle, dubstep and worldwide sounds, Kid Kanevils DJ/Live sets are a force to be reckoned with.

This month also see's the return of our free flexi disk. Kid Kanevil has blessed B-Side with the unreleased extended DJ edit of his '10 second' reflip from the 'freebeatsnbleeps' beat tape.

ROY AYERS @ THE JAZZ CAFE (29TH & 30TH JAN 2009)

Matt Smooth and myself were lucky enough to play at the Roy Ayers gig on the 29th and 30th of December (2009)

We really enjoyed this night, Roy Ayers played a number of classics, from 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine' to 'Running Away' and I got my 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine' LP signed by him too.

It's amazing, he's now 69 and able to give shows like this, he looked like he was really enjoying it to, (he was quite funny at times) I particularly enjoyed the version of 'We Live in Brooklyn' with the lyrics changed to 'We Shop at Tesco's Baby'

A great way to end 2009.

"He's a superstar!" and a legend!

Q - TIP- LIVE IN LONDON @ THE ROUNDHOUSE 14.3.09 (A SCRATCH NIGHT OUT!)

To be honest, there was a lot standing on Q Tip's show and many of us had high expectations. Aside from the fact that we grew up on Tribe, this was Tip's first UK show in over 10 years (since '94??) with a full live band at the historic 3'000 capacity Roundhouse and with his track history of classic beats and rhymes, expectations were definitely riding high.

Upon entering the arena Little Dragon (from Gothenbourg City, home to our very own Scratch in Sweden) and Dj Semtex warmed the crowd to a bubbling hysteria, playing vintage hip hop before point of arrival...

Then Q Tip jumps on stage full of energy, shaking his rump and bouncing around much to the delight of adoring fans.

I have to admit at this point I had mild reservations, would he be just going through the motions, or would we be getting down to the nitty gritty? Fortunately for us it was the latter !

Tip started off with a few new tracks from his recent Renaissance LP which went down a treat, before delving into his vast back catalog, doing all the big Tribe tunes we all wanted to hear, as well as a few less likely numbers, which added a nice touch.

As the night went on Tip brought everyone under his groove, the band did a great job adding nice touches, like the voice vocoder at the end of 'Find Away', sweeet! 'Award Tour', 'Buggin Out', 'Jazz',' Sucka Nigga', 'Bonita Applebum', 'Electric Relaxation', 'Check The Rhyme' were just some of the highlight tracks he played.

But before you know it, the gig was over. Time certainly flies when your having loads of fun!

An hour later and we're standing at the back end of the afterparty queue waiting our turn as good honest club goers do - not like some cats I could mention, who were, as it happens, successful in jumping the queue, oh no sir I'm not bitter at all, 'ha!'

Once in the club, the atmosphere was perfect like an old school warehouse party in a great one off venue, hosting a decent sound system and (most importantly) Q Tip on the one's and two's playing a dope selection of disco, boogie grooves and some sweet hip hop!!

Do things get any better? No not really!
