Greymatter
We are One / Watch This
Unique Uncut
Sometimes I need beats like this in my life. Beats with a powerful engine behind it, pumping beats mixed with thumping basslines.
Both tracks on this single release have a really cool, simple production concept combined with a strong energy which focus's on contemporary rhythms. Both tracks are also blessed by the legendary production skills of Domu!
We Are One ft. Domu PREVIEW by greymatter
We Are One comes with a dubstep approach to it's sound, sparse in places, yet heavy too. The track has some strong percussion patterns and warm bass sounds which you'll only fully appreciate on a big soundsystem.
Watch This ft. Domu PREVIEW by greymatter
Watch This has more of a West London feel about it, definitely more broken in it's drum style and it comes with a lovely piercing keyboard melody that weaves in and out of the whole tune. Simple and effective, modern electronica with a heavy club sound!
Looking forward to hearing the whole Mind Over Matter LP which will be dropping on Unique Uncut in February 2010.

SOULS OF MISCHIEF - PROPER AIM - SINGLE REVIEW
Souls of Mischief
Proper Aim
Heiroglyphics Imperium
Proper Aim is the first single to be taken from the highly anticipated Montezuma's Revenge LP. On first listen it takes me right back to 1993. Now I don't mean this in a negative way as it reminds me of the good feeling I had when I first listened to albums such as the Freestyle Fellowship LP Innercity Griots. It was also the year that was famously mentioned in the Souls classic '93 til Infinity.
The track has a cool double bass sample and a nice laid back beat. But the highlight is the smooth lyrical flows from the Souls crew, which content and rhythm kept me keenly listening throughout the whole song.
Proper Aim can be best be described as a classic sound (not 'old school' as some of the younger generation mistakingly call it) and why modernize a Hip Hop formula when it already works!
Judging by their last trip to the UK they still have their fan base firmly intact too.

KIDKANEVIL - BASHO BASHO - LP REVIEW
Kidkanevil
Basho Basho
First Word Records
If minimal electro is your thing you will love Basho Basho from Hip Hop producer Kidkanevil.
Kid clearly takes much of his influences on this LP from a mixture of environmental sound fx, computer games and some unique sounds from Asia and Japan. For example tracks such as the long titled The Whistling Of Wintry Wind Lantern 2 Bokusha 3! feature the lovely sound of the Kyoto Harp mixed with some really nice programmed drum beats, reminding me a little of early Photek. The Asian theme continues with the tracks Drunken Master and Land of Plenty Bokusha 2.
One of my favourite songs is the computer game inspired single Megajoy with it's Pacman, Bomberman and Mario game samples, is right up my street (being an early computer games nerd).
Megajoy by kidkanevil
Basho Basho minimal in places with some tracks consisting of no drum patterns at all. But the music certainly does take your imagination on an interesting journey. The rich electronic soundscapes on this LP are sometimes very relaxing, sometimes quite intense but certainly always enjoyable. Clever, imaginative music!

MYSTRO - F.D.T EP - REVIEW
Mystro Presents
The F.D.T EP
Don't Bizznizz
I've always been a fan of Mys Diggi aka Digmund Freund aka Mystro. He has the voice to masterfully spit lyrics through the music so that all his rhythms and content are crystal clear for the listener to enjoy.
The F.D.T. EP sees Mystro in a more moodier state of mind than usual with much of the content focusing on issues he feels that need addressing. The music reflects this well. Favourite joint from the EP would probably be Maintain produced by Earth Hip Hop, sounding like an MF Doom production Mystro discusses the hard work that has to be put in in order to succeed and survive in the music business.
There is plenty of variety musically and lyrically and the smooth styled Aquarius is a good example of this, with Mystro rhyming in a more reflective mood. FDT is a solid taster of Mystro's skills and certainly leaves me ready for more from one of the best MC's the UK has to offer. Look out for the full LP in 2010.

FOREIGN BEGGARS - UNITED COLOURS OF BEGGATRON - LP REVIEW
Foreign Beggars
United Colours of Beggatron
Dented
Foreign Beggars have been around for sometime now and with United Colours of Beggatron I'm sure their reputation will continue to advance.
This LP is a really cool fusion of modern soul, dubstep and drum and bass which is cleverly pieced together under the broader umbrella of Hip Hop and Rap.
There is much to enjoy on this project which combines well produced creative beats with imaginative rhymes. Some impressive guests feature too such as Detroit's very own Phat Kat on Big N' Black and the excellent Guilty Simpson (Stonesthrow) on Prove it. I particularly like the inclusion of female vocalist Audra Nishata on the LP. Break Free has nice musical hook from Audra accompanied with a beat that could be best described as a Dilla-esque. Audra also features on one of my favourites tracks the melodic Higher.
The production is generally on point and tracks like the big sounding Contac' ft the appropriately named Noisia is a good example of this. in fact there are plenty of club bangers on this LP. I can definitely see myself playing out tracks like Keep it coming in a heaving club, the track features Uk stallwarts Dr Syntax, Jehst and Kyza who rock the beat with their established professionalism.
This has to be one of the freshest Hip Hop releases I've heard coming out of the UK in 2009.

SCRATCH PRESENT : J ROCC - THE ORIGINAL BEAT JUNKIE (STONESTHROW) - A SCRATCH 13 1/3 YEAR BIRTHDAY SPECIAL!!
On November 28th Scratch are celebrating in true musical style with their 13 1/3 year birthday party at The Big Chill House!
And to celebrate with us we have a very special guest flying in from LA via the very cool Stones Throw label.....one of the worlds most renowned DJ's, the one and only J.Rocc from the Beat Junkies!!
One of the original turntablists, J. Rocc founded the Beat Junkies in 1992 with Melo-D and Rhettmatic, but has done just as much on his own as in a group setting.
He began DJing in the mid-'80s with California group PSK. Soon after forming the Beat Junkies (which included core member Babu plus future stars Shortkut and D-Styles) the crew became a seminal force in the rise of instrumental hip-hop.
In addition to numerous mixtapes and his own production for Stones Throw releases, (including classics such as his funky 'Gotta Have Freedom' Remix) J. Rocc has been the DJ for Madlib's live shows since the early 2000's, was the 3rd member of Jaylib (Madlib & J Dilla) during the group's live events and collaborated with Madlib on Beat Konducta Vol. 5-6: A Tribute to J Dilla.
J. Rocc is currently working on a solo album for Stones Throw.

Joining J. Rocc to host the night will be resident MC, Tukka, who always adds even more fire to the night with his electric mic skills!!
Not forgetting our 13 1/3 residents who have been Dj'ing this event since it's inception back in 1996, Matt Smooth, Lyley, DJ Biznizz, Richy Pitch and Tomski.
Expect to see plenty of heads coming to celebrate with Scratch, B-Boys in action and possibly some free give always including a special Scratch Addict Tee especially made for the Birthday !!

SCRATCH PRESENT : SKITZ AND RODNEY P!!!!! (SATURDAY 24TH OCT @ THE BIG CHILLHOUSE, KINGS CROSS, LONDON)
Scratch are proud to announce their October guests as Skitz and Rodney P!
http://www.myspace.com/daddyskitz
http://www.myspace.com/riddimkilla
Both have had a massive influence on the shape of Hip Hop in the UK and both have had a long musical relationship that has lasted more than a decade.
Rodney P began his mic skills more than 20 years ago as original member of the highly influential London Posse, who released Gansta Chronicles and which Hip Hop Connection described in 2007 as The Most Important UK Hip Hop Album of all time. The Lp featured classics such as How's Life in London?, Jump Around and Money Mad which still sound fresh today!
In 2001 Skitz released his groundbreaking 2001 LP Countryman with the infectious Dedication, starring Rodney, winning Best Single at the 2000 UK Hip Hop Awards, the following year Countryman then wins LP of the year!
In 2002 BBC 1xtra is born and Skitz and Rodney P are asked to present the flagship Hip Hop show, interviewing the likes of 50 Cent, Chuck D, Talib Kweli, Redman and Method Man. They also co-produce the first track to be played on the station which features Beverley Night and Blak Twang.
Fast forward to 2009 and Skitz is about to drop his second producer led album Sticksman and again Rodney features strongly on tracks such as the bass bubbler Left and the awesome Struggla that features Hip Hop superstar Kardinal Offishal. The LP also features the talented vocals of the likes of Dynamite MC, L Dot Man, Skibbadee, Buggsy, Masta Ace and Wordsworth!
Meanwhile Rodney P is working on his second solo LP, on his own Riddim Killa records, and recording and touring with the Dubpistols where he features on tracks such as the Stranglers cover of Peaches featuring Specials frontman Terry Hall.
So come down to Scratch @ The Big Chill House and witness for yourself these 2 Hip Hop legends from the UK doing what they do best, a live DJ set from Skitz hosted by Rodney P. You may even be lucky enough to catch a sneak, live preview of a couple of tracks from the forthcoming Sticksman LP too.
It's gonna be solid ! !

SATURDAY 25TH JULY - DJ MK (Kiss FM) and host M3NSA
SATURDAY 25TH JULY - DJ MK (Kiss FM) and host M3NSA
Scratch is proud to announce DJ MK and host MC, M3NSA as our next special guests at Scratch!
DJ MK is one of the UKs leading Hip Hop deejays. He has been a favourite on the club scene for the last 10 years, displaying his turntable dexterity up and down the UK and throughout Europe, Australia and the United States. What sets MK apart from many of his peers is his ability to rock a crowd wherever he plays, be it Londons Ministry Of Sound, an Underground UK Hip Hop Jam, Pacha in Ibiza or an Arctic Monkeys after-party.
MK was the first UK DJ to release regular, well-packaged Hip Hop mixtapes at a time when no other DJ was doing so. These mix tapes earned him his props and a slot on the Capital rap show with Tim Westwood from 93 to 95. His mixtapes are now sold all over the world.
The man has done it all from providing cuts on various tracks for the likes of Roots Manuva, Dido, Jehst, Skitz and Lewis Parker to promoting Londons premier Hip Hop jams (The Hop and Live & Direct). MK held down one of the most popular shows on London based Hip Hop station Itch FM for four years before being headhunted by Kiss 100. He know host his own show on 1xtra alongside Extended Player, Shortie Blitz.
MK continues to tour the world as Roots Manuva’s DJ and is also a member of the powerhouse DJ crew Extended Players, alongside Shortee Blitz, Mr Thing and Harry Love.
He was behind the homegrown Hip Hop anthem Its All Live on Stonegroove Recordings, has released two volumes of his London Underground mix CDs to great acclaim and recently he compiled & mixed Bangers & Mash Vol. 2 (out now on Boombox). MK’s mixtape buzz led him to ink a deal with Antidote / Sanctuary Records for his first official album Above Board. It boasts 100% exclusive tracks from the cream of the UK Hip Hop scene. The first single lifted from the album is the DJ MK & Fallacy club banger My Show, which also finds MK weighing in with his debut production credit.

MK will be joined by our special guest host, M3NSA.
Considered by many as one of the hardest working men in the fusion of true school hip-hop and West-African home grown hiplife, M3NSA a multi-talented indie-soul singer, emcee and producer is poised to be one London's finest performers. His music and lyrics possess refreshingly effortless witticism and soulful melodies that are both entertaining and provocative.
M3NSA is currently working on his 'Weather Report' EP due for release soon, he has also collaborated with Scratch's very own Richy Pitch on his forthcoming Ghanaian project 'Ye Fre Mi Richy Pitch' due out in October on BBE.

SCRATCH PRESENT: JOE 2000 AND WANLOV THE KUBOLOR (SATURDAY 27th JUNE)
Scratch are proud to present a very special night of music featuring special guest DJ, Joe 2000 and, all the way from Ghana, West Africa, Host MC Wanlov the Kubolor.
Joe 2K is probably best known for being one part of duo RPM (Mo Wax) and more recently The Runaways (Ultimate Dilema) with co-partner AJ Kwame. The 2 met back in 1991 in Brighton and went on to release a number of highly acclaimed singles and Albums featuring talented MC's from the likes of Masta Ace and Iriscience from Dilated Peoples. Joe, well known for his turntable skills too, will be sure to rock a sweet party set for the Scratch crowd!!
http://www.myspace.com/therunawaysuk
Wanlov the Kubolor is already making waves both in his native country of Ghana and worldwide. His album 'Green Card' (which is available on Itunes) is a refreshing and entertaining social comment on life in Ghana as well as some interesting experiences while living in the US.
Kubolor recently teamed up with Scratch's very own Richy Pitch, while Richy was living in Ghana, to collaborate on his forthcoming LP 'Ye Fre Mi Richy Pitch' out on BBE in October.
Known as the crowned Prince of Pidgen Music, Kubolor is very arguably the most refreshing artist on the planet. This barefooted, skirt-clad musician swings his pendulum shakers whilst he raps and sings, telling stories from a Ghanaian/Romanian perspective.
Wanlov recently blessed Radio 1 with his mic skills, so be sure to check his truly original style when he blesses the mic as special host at Scratch this month!!

SCRATCH IN SWITZERLAND @ THE BRITS
This year marked the 20th Anniversary of the British Snowboarding Championships in Laax, Switzerland...and what a week it was...
Scratch rocked the first night of the Brits with Matt Smooth and Lyley in full effect together with special guests Dj Vadim, MC Paz and Nick Maxwell. From the moment the doors opened the snow community poured in quickly filling the dance floor and busting some pretty 'original' breakdance moves which, it has to be said, brought a lot of laughs. The time seemed to whizz by as the beats kept on dropping til the early hours of the morning...a sure sign of a fun night!
Big shout and much love goes out to Vadim, MC Paz and Nick Maxwell for their handy work on the 1's and 2's! Oh yeah and then there was the afterparty, which i can't remember much about - as in the words of Skinnyman 'if i make it til tomorrow I'll be surprised'!!
With a huge amount of effort we did make it out of bed the next morning and up to the slopes for the first round of competitions, where we provided the tunes for the riders to amp themselves up and throw themselves down the halfpipe, pulling off some amazing tricks. Laax is well known to have one of the best snowboard parks in the whole of Europe.
The evening was spent cooking pasta, drinking wine and putting the final touches to our next Scratch flyer design on Saturday 25th April - a hot one featuring Dj Dexter from the Avalanches, MC Mystro and Dj Biznizz - before emailing it off to Tomski and Richy Pitch, who were back home in London taking care of Scratch at the Big Chill House with special guest Shortee Blitz...who we understand ripped the roof off the sucka!
A couple of days later back at the Brits and it was Funk Royale's turn to rock the night time entertainment, with a golden selection of classic party grooves...another nonstop dancefloor excursion into the early hours of the morning courtesy of Dj's Ben Bailey, Bonobo, Mr Chex, Matt Smooth and MC Tukka & Stu 'Deep Sax'.
Each day was spent up on the slopes djing and boarding, blessed with the perfect combination of sunshine, snow, good music, beer and friendly faces. Big thanks to John Dragon (music coordinator) Tony (soundman), Stu and Spencer for organizing such a great week at this years Brits.
Well now back on British soil...and we are still flying high from the experience. Not that our feet ever left the ground whilst carving up the snow, our boards were firmly fixed to the side of the mountain.
Well we wouldn't want any serious DJ injury's now would we!

Q - TIP- LIVE IN LONDON @ THE ROUNDHOUSE 14.3.09 (A SCRATCH NIGHT OUT!)
To be honest, there was a lot standing on Q Tip's show and many of us had high expectations. Aside from the fact that we grew up on Tribe, this was Tip's first UK show in over 10 years (since '94??) with a full live band at the historic 3'000 capacity Roundhouse and with his track history of classic beats and rhymes, expectations were definitely riding high.
Upon entering the arena Little Dragon (from Gothenbourg City, home to our very own Scratch in Sweden) and Dj Semtex warmed the crowd to a bubbling hysteria, playing vintage hip hop before point of arrival...
Then Q Tip jumps on stage full of energy, shaking his rump and bouncing around much to the delight of adoring fans.
I have to admit at this point I had mild reservations, would he be just going through the motions, or would we be getting down to the nitty gritty? Fortunately for us it was the latter !
Tip started off with a few new tracks from his recent Renaissance LP which went down a treat, before delving into his vast back catalog, doing all the big Tribe tunes we all wanted to hear, as well as a few less likely numbers, which added a nice touch.
As the night went on Tip brought everyone under his groove, the band did a great job adding nice touches, like the voice vocoder at the end of 'Find Away', sweeet! 'Award Tour', 'Buggin Out', 'Jazz',' Sucka Nigga', 'Bonita Applebum', 'Electric Relaxation', 'Check The Rhyme' were just some of the highlight tracks he played.
But before you know it, the gig was over. Time certainly flies when your having loads of fun!
An hour later and we're standing at the back end of the afterparty queue waiting our turn as good honest club goers do - not like some cats I could mention, who were, as it happens, successful in jumping the queue, oh no sir I'm not bitter at all, 'ha!'
Once in the club, the atmosphere was perfect like an old school warehouse party in a great one off venue, hosting a decent sound system and (most importantly) Q Tip on the one's and two's playing a dope selection of disco, boogie grooves and some sweet hip hop!!
Do things get any better? No not really!

SCRATCH GRAFFITI GALLERY
When Scratch kicked off in '96 it was always about spotlighting the full spectrum of hip hop/b-boy culture..what we're listenning too, looking at, reading and writing about.
The graff wall at the Scala became the visual focus of the night, where artists were invited to fill the space for a months public viewing. Along with super 8 and 16mm film footage in the main room, this became a regular writers conference, including the annoying pen checks at the door, with international legends passing through every month.
Artists to date include, She One, Solo One, VOP, Banksy, Nick Walker, Inky, Seize, Mode 2, Mear, Roughe..and a shed load more!! This section will grow so keep a close eye as the shots come out of the vaults.
If you have more to share drop us a line.
